Causes
The Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to reduce the size of its army.
When the government tried to disband some Freikorps units, many right-wing groups became furious.
What Happened?
In March 1920:
- Wolfgang Kapp led 5,000 Freikorps troops into Berlin
- The government fled the capital
- The army refused to fight the rebels
The republic appeared close to collapse.
Why Did the Putsch Fail?
Workers organised a general strike:
- Factories shut down
- Transport stopped
- Electricity failed
Germany could not function.
After four days, Kapp gave up.
Why Was the Kapp Putsch Important?
The putsch revealed major weaknesses:
- The army did not fully support democracy
- Right-wing extremists remained dangerous
- The republic survived only because workers defended it
