On 11 November 1918, Germany signed the Armistice.

An armistice is an agreement to stop fighting.

Many Germans were shocked by defeat because:

  • fighting had mostly taken place outside Germany
  • government propaganda had hidden the true situation
  • military leaders claimed the army had not really been beaten

This helped create the “stab-in-the-back” myth.
